lead

Lead is a highly toxic naturally-occuring metal found in the earth.  It is also used by industry in many materials and products.  Lead and its compounds can be found in all parts of the environment, including: air, drinking water, rivers and lakes, dust and soil, and plants and animals used for food.  Because it typically cannot be seen, tasted, or smelled it is very difficult to detect.

Deteriorated lead paint is the main source of childhood and adult lead poisoning.  If the dwelling you inhabit was built in the 70's or before, there is a good chance you have lead paint.  Lead was used in paint to better coat the finish, and so it would not suffer as much wear and tear.

The problems arise when the old, lead-based paint is allowed to deteriorate or when the paint is disturbed.  Places where paint is chipping and where painted surfaces such as windows and doors, rub together to create lead flakes and dust, are the most concern.

Lead can be found, in homes in the city, country or suburbs.  In apartments, single family homes, and both private and public housing.

Lead poisionings can also occur in dogs, cats and other household pets.

I have no symptoms, so I will be okay right????

NO  sometimes lead poisioning has no symptoms.  But it can still be in your blood.  It can affect and cause damage to the brain and nervous system, behavior and learing problems, (such as ADHD, and Hyperactivity), slowed growth, hearing problems, headaches, difficulities during pregnancy, miscarriages, high blood pressure, digestive problems, nerve disorders, memory and concentration problms, muscle and joint pain, at extremely high levels, it can cause seizures, coma and even DEATH!

How do I get rid of lead problems???

To permanently remove lead hazards, you must hire a lead 'abatement' contractor.  Abatement (or permanent hazard elimination) methods include removing, sealing, or enclosing lead-based paint with special materials.  Just painting over the hazard with regular pain is not enough.  Removing lead-based paint improperly can increase the danger to your family.
